Fuel tanker blaze near the Prairie Siding Bridge

Firefighters responded to a fuel tanker fire at Grande River Line and Jacob Road near the Prairie Siding Bridge on Tuesday evening, July 7.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services officials say crews from Station #15 Raleigh North and Station #16 Raleigh South responded to the fire at 5:40 p.m., with assistance from Station #1 Chatham.

“The fire started in the cab area of the truck and the driver was able to escape safely,” fire officials said in a press release.

Fearing a fuel explosion, an evacuation notice was given to residents in the area, while firefighters worked to stabilize the situation, fire officials say.

“Crews quickly kept the fuel tanks cooled while they extinguished the fire.”

No one was injured as a result.

The estimated damage is pegged at $480,000.

The cause remains undetermined, fire officials say.
