Talking to yourself

From the Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

We all do it, even if we don’t want to admit it because we think others will consider us weird.

It’s that common practice of talking to ourselves.

Lisa Hayes once said, “Be careful how you are talking to yourself, because you are listening.”

Without even thinking we say things like, “I’m so stupid!” or “I’m a terrible parent!” or “I’m never on time!”

What can seem on the outset as simple self-deprecation can over time have us convinced that we actually are bad parents who are stupid and can never get anywhere on time.

Consider carefully the words of Proverbs 18:21, which says, “Death and Life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

Jesus also spoke about the importance and power of our words and gave a stern warning, as recorded in Matthew 12:36: “But I tell you that men will have to give an account on the day of judgement for every careless word they have spoken.”

Oh my!

If that isn’t incentive enough for us to be more careful about our words, I don’t know what is!

Think about this for a minute.

Would you stand for it if your boss at work told you that you were stupid or that you were a terrible parent?

No way!

You’d have a report filed to HR before he could blink!

So why do you do it to yourself?

Do yourself a favour this week and listen a bit more closely to the words that are coming out of your mouth.

Then be prepared to change!
