Ice jam remains on the St. Clair River, flood watch extended

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has extended a flood watch, as an ice jam remains on the St. Clair River, along with elevated water levels.

“Recent below-normal air temperatures have promoted substantial ice growth on Lake St. Clair, resulting in ice breaking efforts being halted on the St. Clair River due to the inability to flush out ice into the lake,” SCRCA officials stated on Thursday, February 11, 2021.

“Current northerly winds are promoting the flow of thin ice from Lake Huron into the St. Clair River and are elevating water levels. While much of this thin is deteriorating, thicker ice has the potential to add to the existing ice jam and exacerbate conditions. Winds over the coming days are anticipated to shift between northerly and easterly directions.

SCRCA officials added: “Residents along the St. Clair River may experience erosion and/or flooding as a result of impacts from the wind and ice jam.”

Residents are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous ice conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water and children and pets should be kept away from the water, SCRCA officials added.

“The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise,” SCRCA officials say.

“Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.”

This message will remain in effect until Tuesday, February 16, 2021, unless otherwise updated.
