Winter sidewalk maintenance reminder

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is reminding all residents of sidewalk responsibilities.

The Municipality plows all sidewalks in Chatham-Kent when the depth of snow accumulation is greater than or equal to 8 cm.

Per Municipal Bylaw No. 178-2019, it is the responsibility of all property owners outside of designated downtown business areas to de-ice sidewalks surrounding their properties.

A map of the downtown business areas maintained by the Municipality can be found on our website at www.chatham-kent.ca.

“Slippery sidewalks can result in injuries,” stated Ryan Brown, director of Public Works, in a media release.

“We want to ensure that sidewalks adjacent to properties are kept free of ice and snow accumulations, and we encourage you to offer assistance to any neighbours that might be in need.”

Brown added: “The Municipality appreciates your co-operation. As we know, winters can be lengthy and at times frustrating due to changing weather conditions and temperatures. There are 410 km of sidewalks within Chatham-Kent.”

Residents are encouraged to report unsafe sidewalk conditions to 3-1-1 or ck311@chatham-kent.ca, Municipal officials say.

Failure to maintain a sidewalk free of ice may result in a fine to the property owner.

The Municipality is also reminding property owners that clearing large amounts of snow from your private property onto the street is prohibited, Municipal officials added.
