National Public Safety Telecommunications Week being recognized

National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is being recognized from April 11-17, 2021.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service is proud to recognize our 911 Communication Centre staff next week during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, police officials said in a media release.

“Our Communications staff are a talented group of professionals who deal with a wide range of situations, often times simultaneously,” stated says Sheri Somerville, manager, in a press release.

“They are experts in their field and the best example of what it means to be a Tele-communicator and essential workers through trying times. They serve our community well; congratulations to them this has been a challenging year, they deserve it.”

These dedicated dispatchers and call takers are more often than not, the unseen heroes heard only through phone or radio transmissions.

2020 has been a challenging year for all, in particular those working in emergency services, police officials added.

The Communications Centre answers both emergency 911 calls and non-emergency calls for the service.

They are the public’s first point of contact during an emergency where they are tasked with obtaining information in a timely and relevant manner.

In turn, they relay this information to our officers to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

The Communications Centre also dispatches for Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services.

Police officials say throughout the week they will thank the dispatchers for their commitment and professionalism, who make a difference on every call and are the unsung heroes of public safety.
