State of emergency terminated in Wheatley

The state of emergency in Wheatley has been terminated.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff on June 3, 2021 declared a state of emergency regarding the gas leak discovered in downtown Wheatley Wednesday afternoon.

The presence of Hydrogen Sulphide was detected at 15 Erie Street North, Municipal officials say.

Electric service was shut off for 20 customers in the area, including 13 residential dwellings.

A total of 16 residents were evacuated without incident.

Municipal officials said earlier this month investigators had not determined the origin of the leak but confirmed it is not related to any natural gas service provided by Enbridge.

The Provincial Ministry of Environment and a Windsor Hazmat team had attended the scene as well.
