Blood donor clinic on Tuesday, August 17 in Wallaceburg

Canadian Blood Services is holding a blood donor clinic in Wallaceburg on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.

Marisa Gatfield, territory manager, donor relations and collections for Canadian Blood Services, says there are currently 18 appointments available.

“The demand for blood products has increased above pre-COVID-19 levels as most regions across Canada have begun to phase in their reopening plans allowing hospitals to ramp up surgical procedures that were put on hold,” Gatfield told the Sydenham Current.

“Besides the rise in demand for blood as hospital increase procedures, the summer season often translates into a high number of accidents on the road with a greater potential of injuries requiring blood transfusions. We are urging eligible blood donors to book and keep their appointments to support lifesaving care for patients.”

Gatfield said all blood types are needed, especially O-negative.

“Did you know, only 7% of Canadians have the universal blood type?” Gatfield said.

“O-negative red blood cells are compatible with all other blood types. This means that in critical emergencies – when there is no time to confirm a patient’s blood type – O-negative blood can make a lifesaving difference. We are urging those who are eligible to roll up a sleeve to help.”

Gatfield is encouraging people to book now at blood.ca or download the GiveBlood app on their phone.
