Making the most of your time

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Time, as we all know, is an unrenewable resource.

Once it is gone, it is gone.

We do not get a second chance to spend yesterday’s time today.

There is a terrific quote by Gerald B. Klein, and here is what it says: “Today I begin by doing and not wasting my time. In one week I will be miles beyond the person I am today. Today I will not imagine what I would do if things were different. They are not different. I will make success with what material I have. Today I will stop saying, ‘If I had time…’ I know I will never ‘find time’ for anything. If I want time I must make it. Today I will act toward other people as though this might be my last day on earth. I will not wait for tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes.”

There’s a lot of wisdom in those words.

The apostle Paul said something along a similar vein in Ephesians 5:15-16: “Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”

Basically, he was urging this church to use the time and opportunities allotted to them to do good, help others, and share the love of God because there was much evil in the world.

It is interesting to point out that he wrote those words in the first century, almost 2,000 years ago, yet the same holds true for us today.

Too many of us live life by the adage that Robert Benchley pointed out: “Anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn’t the work he is supposed to be doing at that moment.”

Someone else once said, “Nothing makes a person more productive than the last minute.”

Let’s learn something from these words today and take some decisive action, because this day will never be available to you ever again.
