Pushing past a barrier

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

Back in 1923 an American physicist by the name of Robert Millikan made a defining statement: “There is no likelihood man can ever tap the power of the atom.”

Later that year he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics.

Needless to say, Robert Millikan was wrong, quite wrong.

Can you imagine what our world would have missed out on if we had simply taken for granted that a man of his intelligence must be right?

I mean, he won the Nobel Prize so if Robert Milliken says that tapping the power of the atom isn’t possible then he must be on to something, right?

Let’s be honest, we can count ourselves out of a whole lot of stuff if we aren’t willing to push past a barrier, even if that barrier is someone trusted and knowledgeable.

The fact of the matter is, nobody knows it all. I like what the apostle Paul said to the fledgling Philippian church in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”

There are no limits with God and we can always bring our questions to Him.

Robert Millikan would have done well if he could have time travelled to the future and met physicist, Robert Feynman, who was the co-winner of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1965.

He is quoted as saying, “I would rather have questions that can’t be answered than answers that can’t be questioned.”

Obviously, someone somewhere did indeed question Milliken’s conclusion about the atom and the rest, they say, is history.

Making discoveries will not happen for us if we stop at the first sign of difficulty and decide that the road ends there.

No, a barrier is just that, a barrier, and sometimes the way to a new beginning is over a barrier that stands in our way.

I invite you to take hold of God’s hand today and let Him help you over whatever barrier you may be facing.

He knows the end from the beginning and can help you reach your goal.
