Remnants of Hurricane Pamela bringing rain to the region

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement across Chatham-Kent.

Meanwhile, the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority has also issued a watershed conditions statement across the region.

Environment Canada officials say rain, at times heavy, is expected late Friday through Friday night.

“Heavy rainfall with amounts reaching 20 to 40 mm. Isolated amounts up to 50 mm possible,” forecasters say.

“Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to move across the area late Friday through Friday night.”

SCRCA officials say the remnants of Hurricane Pamela are forecast to track through Southern Ontario, bringing 30 mm to 50 mm of rain between Thursday evening and Sunday.

“Chance of thunderstorms this evening could bring additional rain in localized areas,” SCRCA officials say.

“Wind gusts attributed with this system are anticipated to be westerly and between 40 km/h and 60 km/h. Residents along the Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron shorelines may experience wind-driven wave action and surge”.

SCRCA officials added: “Water levels across the watershed remain elevated as a result of significant rainfall events over the past month and will be moderately responsive to additional rainfall. Minor flooding into natural floodplain areas, parks and farmland is possible.”

Individuals are reminded to avoid shorelines, watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks and cold, swift moving water.

Children and pets should be kept away from the water, SCRCA officials added.

The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise.

Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely.

This message will remain in effect until Monday, October 18, 2021, unless otherwise updated, SCRCA officials say.
