Fire destroys home outside of Wheatley

A fire destroyed a home in Wheatley early Saturday morning, October 30, 2021.

“Station #20 Wheatley along with Station #19 Tilbury and Station #17 Merlin (Tanker only) were called to a structure fire on the 4th Concession Line just before 2 a.m. (on) Saturday morning,” Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services officials said in a media release.

“When Station #20 arrived the home was fully involved and collapsed shortly after their arrival. Fire crews contained the fire to the two story home protecting nearby barns and equipment.”

Fire officials say the Chatham-Kent Police Service were on scene and made contact with the homeowner, who was not home at the time of the fire.

“Heavy Equipment (was) brought in to assist firefighters with extinguishing the fire,” fire officials say, adding that there were no injuries reported, the cause is undetermined and the estimated loss is $350,000.

“With the weather turning cold, CK Fire would like to remind anyone planning to use portable electric space heaters, make sure to keep the heater at least three feet (one metre) away from anything that can burn, including people. Use a heater with an auto shut-off if it tips over and always turn off and unplug heaters when leaving the house or going to bed.”
