The first step toward development of a multi-unit residential project in Wallaceburg will come before the February 14 Chatham-Kent Council planning session.
Council will consider a proposal to sever a property to create a new 5.4-acre site on Base Line Road in Wallaceburg, Municipal officials said in a media release.
If council approves the land severance, it will mark the first step toward creation of a multi-phase development, the first of which would be a five-story, 85 unit building with a municipal address of 7030 Base Line Road on the community’s southern sector.
The development will be known as Royal Ridge Residences and will feature a mix of one-and two-bedroom units as well as several amenities including an onsite gym, Municipal officials say.
Mayor Darrin Canniff said the first of what could be three buildings could be completed within 12 months after planning requirements are met and construction begins.
The development will require further municipal approval for zoning amendments and site plan before it proceeds.
Canniff said there is significant pent-up demand for additional housing in Wallaceburg.
“This is the first major housing development for the community in years and I expect it will be the first of many,” he said, in a media release.
“There are a number of other projects in the planning phase, and I expect 2023 to be a banner year for residential construction in Wallaceburg.”
Canniff said the developer, whose name hasn’t been disclosed, has a track record of building in Chatham-Kent.
“This is going to be a first-class development and an attractive option for residents.”
