Charges have been laid after a bomb threat on Friday at WDSS.
“At approximately 1 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2022 police were notified of a bomb threat at Wallaceburg District Secondary School,” Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege.
“Police responded and assisted with the evacuation of the school to ensure the safety of students, staff and the public. Later, when it was determined safe to do so, police and staff from Wallaceburg District Secondary School conducted a detailed search of the building and no explosive materials were found.”
Police officials added: “Through investigation police quickly determined the identity of the youth that made the threat on social media. The youth was located arrested and charged accordingly. The youth was later released with a future court date. The Chatham-Kent Police Service would like to ensure the public that there are no safety concerns.”
In a letter posted on the WDSS school website on Friday, Melissa Mallette, principal at WDSS, said she appreciates the efforts of the Chatham-Kent Police Service and the cooperation of LKDSB staff in the investigation.
“We recognize that learning about this potential threat may have caused some uncertainty or is a stressful experience for students,” Mallette said.
“We are encouraging students to reach out to a trusted staff member to share their thoughts and concerns. Please also know that LKDSB staff members will be available on Monday, March 7 to offer counselling supports, as needed. Student and staff safety are top priorities for the school and the LKDSB.”
Mallette added: “We will continue to work closely with Chatham-Kent Police Services to ensure a safe learning environment for everyone. Should you have any further questions, please contact the school or the Chatham-Kent Police Service.”
