Chatham-Kent uses both the Weed Control Act and Chatham-Kent’s Long Grass and Weed Height By-Law to control long grass and weeds on private property. The Long Grass and Weed Height By-Law is enforced from April 1 to November 1. All properties not subject to the Weed Control Act must cut the grass and weeds on their property when it exceeds 20 centimetres or 8 inches. Naturalized Areas are exempt if they meet the following conditions:
Owners maintain a buffer strip that’s at least 1m around all sides to maintain aesthetics and prevent the spread of plant species and minimize the impact on adjacent land.
Owners must prevent and control infestations at all times.
Naturalized Areas comply with the Weed Control Act.
