Heritage home presentation made in Chatham

Mayor Darrin Canniff and Councillor Michael Bondy, alongside members of The Municipal Heritage Committee, presented a gift basket to the homeowners of 158 Victoria Avenue in Chatham, recently.

This property has been otherwise referred to as The Martin House after a successful local entrepreneur, Samuel T. Martin.

Purchased in late 2021, The Martin House is currently owned by local resident, Alora Whiteley.

The Martin House built circa 1885 is an excellent example of an asymmetrical Queen Anne architecture with two-storey bay windows, crenulated brickwork and a unique polychromatic patterned slate roof.

The patterned roof grabs the attention of those passing by the property.

The property also houses an exquisite front covered veranda.

Lindsay Swackhammer, Chair of The Municipal Heritage Committee notes that “the property is located in one of Chatham-Kent’s most historic districts. Every local in the area knows Victoria Avenue and the number of beautiful, historic homes along that stretch. On any given day you can find people walking and observing all the beautiful homes, especially The Martin House.”
