A father to follow

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I had a funeral recently which really spoke volumes to my heart about the commitment of a good father.

The man who had died was the older of two sons, both adopted, whose mother had died when the boys were only in their early teenage years.

In his eulogy, the surviving son spoke about the commitment and perseverance of their father, especially in those early years after their mother’s death.

He talked about how they never went without and that he and his brother had a good example to follow.

This son, a father himself of two young adult daughters, ended his talk by looking squarely at his father and thanking him for his faithfulness over all those years.

It was a powerful moment in the service and one in which this grieving dad will never forget.

I won’t forget it, either, as it revealed to me the heart of our heavenly Father, who never gives up on us and supplies His constant care all through our lives.

Look at what it says in Psalm 145:8-9: “The LORD is gracious and merciful; slow to anger and great in lovingkindness. The LORD is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works.”

That’s a very good description of our heavenly Father, yet only scratches the surface of His goodness and care for us.

My earthly dad went home to heaven over 34 years ago, but my heavenly Dad watches over me every day and will be with me to the end.

I hope all the dads out there have a blessed Fathers’ Day today, and as a dad myself, today is my favourite day of the year.

Nevertheless, I want to follow the example of my heavenly Father every day of the year!
