Update: Severe thunderstorm warning issued in Chatham-Kent

Update – The severe thunderstorm warning ended at 7:56 p.m. and the thunderstorm watch ended at 9:21 p.m.


Update at 6:35 p.m. – A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued in Chatham-Kent by Environment Canada. Here are the details:

At 6:35 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts and heavy rain.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located west of Lake St. Clair, over Michigan. This line is moving east at 85 km/h.

Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts and heavy rain.

Severe thunderstorms will be near:
Windsor around 6:40 PM EDT.
Wallaceburg around 6:50 PM EDT.

Locations impacted include:
Windsor, Tecumseh, Belle River, Wallaceburg, Florence and Oil Springs.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Update at 5:48 p.m. – A severe thunderstorm watch remains in place in Chatham-Kent

Here are the details:

Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain.

Hazards:
Wind gusts near 90 km/h.
Nickel size hail.
Torrential downpours with rainfall amounts possibly in excess of 50 mm.

Timing:
Continuing this evening.

Discussion:
A line of thunderstorms continues to track across Southern Ontario. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe with strong winds, large hail and heavy rain. Tornadoes also can not be ruled out. The potential for severe thunderstorms will come to an end late this evening.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn’t a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
