Chatham-Kent Public Library has had the CKPL Grows Seed Library for six seasons.
This spring, all 11 branches offered a variety of vegetable, herb and flower seeds for residents to grow.
Over 5,000 packages of seeds were checked out by CK residents.
Based on the success CKPL has experienced with the CKPL Grows Seed Library and interest in the community for creating spaces for pollinators, CKPL is happy to announce the return of the CKPL Grows Seed Library: Fall Native Plants.
Starting September 6, 2022, all branches of CKPL will have a small variety of native plant seeds available for check out.
This seed library contains native plant seeds for many popular local plants including Black-Eyed Susan, Butterfly Weed, Swamp and Common Milkweed, Purple Coneflower, and New England Asters to name a few.
Important to note about this collection is these seeds need to be sown into the ground this Fall as they need the Winter cold to germinate in the Spring.
Instructions will be provided by CKPL for those who want to really test their green thumb to try and start the seeds indoors this Winter.
What is the CKPL Grows Seed Library?
CKPL’s Seed Library provides free seeds for residents to borrow so they can grow healthy gardens, have access to affordable food, and create beautiful spaces in their own backyards and communities.
Now with the Fall Native Plant library, CKPL is helping CK gardeners help our native pollinators too.
What do you need to check out seeds?
All you need is a valid CKPL library card and you can check out 10 packages of seeds.
CKPL Grows Seed Library also need your help.
CKPL would greatly appreciate if community gardeners could save their seeds this year and donate them to the CKPL Grows Seed Libraries to be used again next year.
Seed donations of any variety can be dropped off labelled at any CKPL branch.
With the communities’ help, CKPL can continue to grow the Seed Libraries and offer more seeds in 2023.
