Chatham-Kent’s animal shelter ‘bursting at the seams’

Pet and Wildlife Rescue officials say they’ve seen it all over the news and many communities are experiencing an overflow of animals at local shelters.

It’s no different at Chatham-Kent’s shelter.

“We are a very busy shelter, with over 330 animals currently in our care,” stated Myriam Armstrong, operations manager at PAWR, in a media release.

“Its not unusual at this time of year, however the numbers seem to be increasing and we are bursting at the seams.”

Shelter officials say they currently have 18 dogs, 297 cats and 17 small animals, many who have been surrendered or have come in as strays and not reclaimed, PAWR officials say.

“As you can imagine, we would love these animals to have permanent, stable and loving homes,” added Armstrong.

“If you are planning to add a pet to your life, please consider adopting from us.”

PAWR is also running a fundraising campaign ‘Under One Roof’ designed to raise funds for its daily operations, replenish its emergency medical fund and raise awareness about how we can all help reduce the number of animals that come into the shelter each year.

“It takes a lot of food, supplies and medical care to keep these animals under our roof,” Armstrong said.

“The community’s support is so appreciated and needed so that we can keep abandoned and surrendered animals safe until we can find them a good home.”
