Chatham-Kent exploring the purchase of properties in Wheatley evacuation zone

Chatham-Kent, in cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, is working towards holding a further community public meeting regarding the findings of the engineering investigations in Wheatley.

This meeting is planned to occur on March 1, 2023.

Meeting details will be released shortly.

Municipal officials say prior to the information meeting schedule for March 1, Chatham-Kent officials will be reaching out to owners of the 11 properties within the current Wheatley evacuation zone regarding the potential of purchasing those properties as part of conceptual mitigation plans for the community.

A map of the current evacuation zone is shown above.

If these properties are publicly owned, that will allow for the implementation of safety systems that may be recommended by the municipality’s consultants, and allow for community input into the vision of the area in the future, Municipal officials added.

“It is hoped that these steps may help in the re-building and healing process for the community,” Municipal officials said in a media release.

These are only preliminary discussions at this point, and no final decisions have been made by the municipality about whether to purchase any properties.

Once discussions have occurred with the property owners within the current evacuation zone, municipal administration will be reporting back to Chatham-Kent Council to determine next steps.
