Bystanders help detain suspect after a crash on McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: At 1:11 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle collision on McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg.

Police learned the man was driving south on McNaughton Avenue at a high rate of speed when it collided with a vehicle exiting a parking lot, also travelling south.

Both vehicles sustained extensive damages.

The man exited the vehicle and attempted to flee the scene but was detained by bystanders.

Police arrived and arrested the man.

Upon search and incident to arrest, the man possessed suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl.

He also possessed a homemade conducted energy weapon.

The 33-year-old Ridgetown man was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop after a collision, driving without a license, driving a motor vehicle not equipped with an ignition interlock device, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, weapons dangerous, and five counts of possessing a weapon contrary to a prohibition order.

He was transported to police headquarters and held pending a bail hearing.
