A time to weep

By Brian Horrobin – Special to the Sydenham Current

The events of last weekend in Wallaceburg have shaken this community to the core.

The tragic deaths of three of our bright, vivacious young adults, along with the injuries to two others, have left a pall of gloom hanging over our town.

The ancient king Solomon once said in Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4, “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven… a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance…”

For now, the laughter and dancing have given way to the necessary season of weeping and mourning.

In the midst of this terrible and burdensome grief, though, I have also sensed an amazing groundswell of tenderness and concern from the greater community towards those directly affected by the tragedy.

Social media posts are chock full of comments of kindness along with many, many expressions of prayer support.

Yes, that is what our community needs the most at a time like this.

We need the comfort and care that only our Saviour can provide, but He does that best through His people.

Here is where the church must arise.

Consider the words of 1 Corinthians 12:26, which speaks of the role of the members of the church: “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it.”

With this in mind our community will gather this coming Thursday, June 1 at 7 p.m. at the Wallaceburg Christian Reformed Church.

This is a service for the entire community.

We will pray and sing and call on God, but we will also weep with those in our community who are weeping.

We will suffer with those who are suffering.

Friends, it is a time to mourn, and we will do that together, but we will also receive grace and mercy from the One who knows our grief, and He will help us and heal us.

Come, let’s gather together this Thursday and receive His comfort.
