A group of 20 Wallaceburg Martial Arts students are set to compete in the New York International Karate Championship from July 14 to July 18, 2023.

“There will be competitors from all over the world and this is a once in a lifetime experience,” Sensei Claudine Bourdeau, owner of Wallaceburg Martial Arts, told the Sydenham Current.

“We have former World Kickboxing Champion, Brad Fowler and Professor Jason Arnold helping train our students along with our amazing staff at Wallaceburg Martial Arts. Everyone is working very hard.”

Bourdeau said the cost for the trip is $50,000 for team, which is the only Canadian team entered in the competition.

“We have been fundraiser since the beginning of the year and are working extremely hard to make this trip possible,” Bourdeau said.

“We have sold Carmichael’s meats, we have had friends, family, businesses give us a donations, etc. We are very grateful for the positive response we have so far received. However, any generous donations would be greatly appreciated. As it will help off set the cost for the students of our team. Money goes to registration, bus travel,
accommodations, training, food, etc. while we travel to Plainview, New York and back.”

Bourdeau said their next fundraiser is a car wash and barbecue on Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Valvoline Express Care, located at 67 McNaughton Avenue, right beside A&W.
