The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18 in Wallaceburg made some exciting announcements during a press conference on Friday, December 22, 2023, including: plans for their 2026 centennial celebration, plus details about a revitalization project and the unveiling of the Steve Bilodeau Event Center.
“With 100 years of dedicated service to veterans and the community, the Legion is embarking on a transformative revitalization project to ensure a lasting legacy for generations to come,” Legion officials said in a media release.
“Since its establishment in 1926, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18 has been a beacon of remembrance, service, and community in Wallaceburg. As the Legion approaches its centenary, the commitment to honoring veterans and their families remains unwavering. ‘Lest We Forget’ and ‘We Will Remember Them’ are not mere words; they are the guiding principles that have defined the Legion’s mission throughout the past century.”
In line with its mission, Legion officials say their revitalization project will aim to enhance accessibility, functionality and warmth within the Legion.
“This project reflects the Legion’s dedication to maintaining a space that not only respects its heritage but also meets the evolving needs of the community,” Legion officials say.
“As a significant milestone in this revitalization journey, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 18 proudly unveils the naming of its second floor as the Steve Bilodeau Event Center. This dedication is in honor of Steve Bilodeau, a dedicated individual who has played a pivotal role in the community.”
Legion officials added: “The Steve Bilodeau Event Center represents more than just a physical space; it symbolizes a commitment to preserving the legacy of veterans and their families. Through events, gatherings, and community engagement hosted in this center, the Legion aims to continue representing the ideals of remembrance and service for the next century.”
The Bilodeau family also unveiled a $275,000 donation to kick start the project.
