Crash on the 401 off-ramp in Chatham-Kent leads to impaired driving charges

OPP officials allege: The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Chatham Detachment has charged an individual following a collision investigation.

On January 21, 2024, at approximately 12:55 p.m., the Chatham Detachment responded to a two-vehicle rear-end collision at the Bloomfield Road westbound Highway 401 off-ramp, Municipality of Chatham-Kent.

It was determined that a passenger vehicle, which had been subject of multiple traffic complaints, collided with another stationary passenger vehicle at the stop sign of the Bloomfield Road and Highway 401 off-ramp.

When speaking with the driver of the subject vehicle, the investigating officer observed signs of impairment.

The driver was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Middlesex OPP Detachment where a Drug Recognition Evaluation (DRE) was administered.

As a result of the investigation, a 21-year-old Toronto man was charged with:

– Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

– Dangerous operation

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day Vehicle Impoundment was initiated as per statute.

No serious injuries were reported.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Chatham on February 26, 2024.

The OPP remind motorists that no amount of alcohol or drug is acceptable to consume and drive.
