Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: At 7:47 a.m., police responded to a residence on Sheldon Avenue for a disturbance.
Police were informed a distraught woman was calling for help from a second-floor window and there was a man inside the residence with a firearm.
Upon arrival, officers successfully extracted the woman and ensured her safety.
After negotiations, the man voluntarily excited the residence and was peacefully taken into custody.
A black replica handgun was located and seized.
Further investigation revealed a verbal argument escalated into a physical assault on the woman.
The 30-year-old Chatham man was charged with assault.
He was transported to police headquarters and released with conditions and a future court date of March 25, 2024.
Police had advised the public of a heavy police presence in the area on Wednesday morning and encouraged people to avoid the area.
