The Sydenham Community Curling Club has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Ontario Government under the Seniors Community Grant Program.
Club officials say they will be using the majority of these funds to launch two pickleball leagues at the Curling Club, along with a free ‘Learn to Pickleball Clinic’.
“This four week program will introduce new pickleball players to the fundamentals of the game, allowing them to build confidence in a fun atmosphere,” club officials say.
“We are hoping to engage a cross section of the community especially supporting those over the age of 55 looking for a fun organized activity. The classes run four weeks starting July 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Just show up in your shorts and running shoes, we will provide the paddles, ball and fun.”
Also, a Wednesday night league will feature intermediate/competitive mixed team play on two courts and beginner/casual play on two others. It starts on July 10 and runs until September 11, 2024 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Lastly, a Thursday night drop in ‘fun’ league is open to anyone on all four courts. It starts on July 11 and runs until September 12, 2024 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Registration for the programs is in person on July 3 and July 4 at the Curling Club from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will also be registration for the ‘Learn to Pickleball Clinic’ on July 8, 2024 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“Come register, hang out and play,” club officials say.
For the leagues, cost is $75 per person, per league, or $125 per person for both league nights.
