Walpole Island swearing-in ceremony rescheduled to September 26

Walpole Island First Nation officials say the swearing-in ceremony, originally scheduled for Monday, has been rescheduled to Thursday, September 26 at 5 p.m.

The newly elected Chief and Council did hold a meet and greet on Monday.

Thursday’s event will begin at 5 p.m., with the swearing-in starting at 5:30 p.m.

It will be held in the Council Chambers.

A feast will follow at the Walpole Island Sports Complex.

Leela Thomas was elected Chief of Walpole Island on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Thomas gathered 607 votes in a landslide victory.

Chris Riley finished second at the polls with 187 votes.

Incumbent Chief Dan Miskokomon withdrew from the race.
