Chatham-Kent celebrating Ontario Agriculture Week

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is proud to celebrate Ontario Agriculture Week, which runs from October 7 to 13, by acknowledging the critical role the agriculture sector plays in our community.

This annual celebration, organized by Farm & Food Care Ontario, highlights the contributions of Ontario’s farmers and agricultural businesses to both the local economy and global food supply chain.

It also encourages the community to support local farmers, particularly during Thanksgiving, by shopping locally for holiday meals.

Chatham-Kent is home to a robust agricultural industry, with over 3,500 people employed in the sector locally and an economic output of more than $4 billion annually.

“Our local agriculture sector is one of Chatham-Kent’s most significant economic drivers,” said Sean Columbus, Economic Development Officer, in a media release.

“We are incredibly proud of the businesses and families who have not only sustained, but grown their operations over the years, contributing to the province’s food supply and putting Chatham-Kent on the map globally.”

Looking ahead, the sector is poised for a period of growth and renewal. With over 1,500 positions expected to open by 2031 due to retirements, there is an opportunity for new talent to enter the field.

Chatham-Kent’s standing as a leader in agricultural innovation – through advancements in robotics, food processing, and automation – also creates diverse opportunities for those interested in emerging technologies.
