The road to excellence

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

The late, great Green Bay Packers’ football coach, Vince Lombardi, once said, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”

Oh my, that’s good!

If you’re a sports fan, you’ll know how deflating and uninspiring it is to watch a team playing late in the season that is already out of it.

There is no drive, no passion, and absolutely no indication that the players are aiming at excellence.

Conversely, the team fighting for a playoff spot puts in the extra practice and has their coaches fire up the players in the dressing room before they take the field.

Excellence starts in the mind, by what you think about.

Philippians 4:8 brings this out quite nicely, saying, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

The pursuit of excellence follows the road of a good, positive attitude.

Colossians 3:23 says this: “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.”

A contemporary version of this verse, called The Message, is even clearer: “And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God…”

We are almost at the close of the first month of the year.

Are you off to a good start, or is there work to be done?

Take heart, you still have another 11 months to reach those goals you set on New Year’s Eve!
