Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) has announces its participation in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) as a member of the Ontario Surgical Quality Improvement Network (ON-SQIN).
ACS NSQIP is a nationally validated program utilized by the Ontario Surgical Quality Improvement Network to measure and enhance surgical care, hospital officials say.
“ACS NSQIP hospitals collaborate with a shared goal to improve patient outcomes by tracking, evaluating and comparing information. This initiative underscores CKHA’s commitment to continuously improving surgical outcomes and patient care through data-driven quality improvement,” said Caen Suni, Vice President, Clinical Programs and Operations, CKHA, in a media release.
As part of the program requirements, CKHA has appointed a Surgical Clinical Reviewer who oversees data collection and review from eligible patients.
Data collection includes pre-operative risk factors, lab values and post-operative complications for up to 30 days.
These data points contribute to risk-adjusted reports generated by ACS NSQIP that will guide improvement efforts at CKHA.
With data collection now in progress at the hospital, some patients may receive a call post-surgery as part of this process.
Participation in the program is voluntary.
While CKHA stores necessary patient information for auditing purposes, data in the ACS NSQIP registry remains anonymous.
Gathering sufficient data will take approximately six months to a year, after which CKHA will determine key areas to address in its Surgical Quality Improvement Plan.
