VON’s Ontario Student Nutrition Program launches second ‘Soup for School’ event

Building on last year’s successful partnership with local restaurants, VON’s Ontario Student Nutrition Program is set to launch its second annual Soup for School event from March 17 to 21.

During the third week of March, a portion of proceeds from every bowl of soup purchased at participating restaurants will support School Nutrition Programs in Chatham-Kent. The initiative aims to ensure students attend school well-nourished and ready to learn.

Currently, one in four Canadian children are at risk of going to school hungry.

“We know that children can’t learn on an empty stomach,” said Rosanna Waldram, OSNP Community Development Coordinator, in a media release.

In Ontario, Student Nutrition Programs operate on a cost-shared model, with partial funding from the provincial government. The remaining costs are covered through fundraising, grants, and donations.

“The generosity and support of our community allow these much-needed programs to continue throughout the school year,” Waldram added.

As part of this year’s event, Mamma Maria’s has donated 631 bowls of soup to St. Teresa of Calcutta School, one of the highlighted schools for the week.

Restaurants participating for one day include The Garden on Tuesday, Tru’s on Wednesday, Satellite Restaurant on Thursday, and Links of Kent on Friday. Union Block Bakery Dresden will participate for four days, from Tuesday to Friday. Restaurants participating for the full week include Casa Bella, Korean Fusion, Boston Pizza, Shady Pine, Andy’s Place, Churrascaria, and Teena’s Family Restaurant, which will offer an alternate item.
