Police warn of rising ‘Grandparent Scams’ in Chatham-Kent

Chatham-Kent Police Service officials allege: The Chatham-Kent Police Service is urging the public to be aware of a rising scam targeting seniors— the “Grandparent Scam.”

Over a 24-hour period last week, the Chatham-Kent Police Service received multiple complaints from victims of fraud known as ‘Grandparent Scams.’

Grandparent scams are a type of fraud where scammers impersonate a family member, often a grandchild, to trick elderly individuals into sending money.

These fraudsters typically claim an emergency or urgent need for funds to manipulate victims into complying.

In recent incidents, victims have been deceived into believing that their family members are in distress and that money is urgently needed to secure their release.

The scammers often claim to be affiliated with law enforcement.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service urges community members to remain vigilant and protect themselves.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service emphasizes that:

– No officer or affiliate of the police will ever attend to collect money for bail or any other matter.

– There are no “gag orders” or “safe words” involved in legitimate bail hearings. These are deceptive tactics used by scammers to manipulate victims.

Protect yourself and your loved ones from these fraudulent individuals.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service remains committed to providing information and resources to keep our community safe.
