Canadians will head to the polls on April 28, 2025, for the country’s 45th federal election.
Freshly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney triggered the snap election on Sunday, March 23, 2025, amidst the ongoing trade war with the United States of America.
Elections Canada officials say offices will soon open in all 343 federal ridings, allowing voters to register, cast an early ballot by special vote, or gather information on the election process.
“Any Canadian citizen who is at least 18 years old on election day is eligible to vote, provided they are registered,” Election Canada officials said in a media release.
“Most eligible voters are already listed in the National Register of Electors, but those unsure of their status can check online, call Elections Canada, or visit their local office. Voter registration is also available at polling stations on election day. To cast a ballot, voters must show proof of identity and address, with various forms of identification accepted.
There are multiple ways to vote in this election. Voters can cast their ballots on election day at their assigned polling station or take advantage of advance voting, which runs from April 18 to April 21. Those who wish to vote early can also do so at any Elections Canada office until April 22 at 6 p.m. Another option is voting by mail, which requires an application by the same deadline. Special ballot voting will also be available at designated locations, including university campuses, military bases, and long-term care facilities.”
Election Canada officials added: “Voter information cards will be mailed to registered voters by mid-April, along with a guide to the federal election. However, Elections Canada says voters do not need to wait for their card to confirm where they can vote, as this information is available on its website.”
Elections Canada is also looking to hire election workers across the country to help administer the vote.
Paid positions are available, and interested applicants can apply online or at their local Elections Canada office.
Key deadlines in the election process begin in early April.
Candidate nominations close on April 7, and a full list of candidates in each riding will be available on April 9.
Military personnel will be able to vote on their bases starting April 14, while special ballot voting will take place at universities from April 13 to April 16 and at hospitals from April 20 to April 22.
Incarcerated voters will also have the opportunity to cast their ballots on April 16.
On election day, polls will be open for 12 hours, with specific hours varying by time zone. Mobile polling stations will also serve voters in long-term care facilities and seniors’ residences.
Once the vote is complete, Elections Canada will validate the results, which are expected to be posted online within a few days.
