Shoplifting incident in Chatham leads to theft and drug charges

On April 23, 2025, at approximately 8:31 a.m., police responded to a report of shoplifting incident at a retail store in Chatham.

The suspect, a 36-year-old male from Chatham-Kent was reported to have concealed over $350 worth of merchandise and exited the store without paying.

After being confronted, the suspect dropped some items and fled on foot.

Later that same day, at approximately 1:31 p.m., officers located the suspect.

After a brief foot pursuit, the individual was arrested.

A search, incident to the arrest, was completed which led to the discovery of a rolled-up piece of tin foil containing a white substance suspected to be fentanyl.

Also found was additional paraphernalia and packaging materials.

suspect was transported to the Chatham-Kent Police Headquarters, facing the following charges:

– Theft Under $5000

– Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000

– Resisting Peace Officer

– Escape Lawful Custody

– Possession of a Controlled Substance

The accused is currently being held for bail.
