Federal election being held today across Canada

Canadians are heading to the polls today as voting takes place in the federal election.

Eligible voters must be Canadian citizens who are at least 18 years old. Electors must cast their ballot at their assigned polling station. Voters can find their polling location on their voter information card, or by visiting elections.ca and entering their postal code. They can also call 1-800-463-6868 for assistance.

Voting hours locally are 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Voters must be registered to cast a ballot. Those who are not registered can do so at their polling station when they arrive. Electors can also complete an online form and print a pre-filled registration certificate to speed up the process.

Proof of identity and address is required to vote. A list of accepted identification documents is available on Elections Canada’s website or by calling the agency’s toll-free number.

While a voter information card can make the process smoother, it is not mandatory to have one in order to vote.

Elections Canada advises voters to avoid peak times, such as the opening of polls and around dinnertime, to minimize wait times.

Electors who are voting by special ballot from within their riding and have not yet mailed it back must return it in person to their local Elections Canada office before polls close. Special ballots received after polls close will not be counted.

To ensure timely reporting of results, Elections Canada has added additional workers and plans to start counting some ballots early. Preliminary results will be posted at elections.ca as they become available.

Candidates are permitted to have scrutineers observe the ballot counting process at polling stations and local Elections Canada offices.

Elections Canada is an independent, non-partisan agency that reports directly to Parliament.
