On May 17th, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOTB), we stand together as a school board and as a community to affirm a simple but powerful truth: every person deserves to be seen, heard, and respected for who they are. At the Lambton Kent District School Board, we recognize this day not only as a time to reflect but also as a call to action — to listen more deeply, support more fully, and act more courageously in the face of discrimination.
Too many students and staff within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community continue to face barriers, exclusion, and harm because of their identities. This is unacceptable — and it must change. Education plays a vital role in that change. It is through open dialogue, inclusive learning environments, and a firm commitment to equity that we begin to dismantle the structures that allow discrimination to persist.
Our Strategic Priority of “Inclusive Diversity: Champion anti-oppressive education” is more than just a statement. It’s a promise to our students, families, and staff that LKDSB is committed to building school communities where everyone feels safe, valued, and free to be themselves. Our schools must be places where dignity, kindness, and respect are not the exception — but the foundation.
In support of this commitment, the Pride Flag will be flown at all LKDSB facilities throughout June. This is a visible reminder of our solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families, and of our shared responsibility to create a future where no one is made to feel invisible or unsafe because of who they are or who they love.
If you have concerns about a student’s safety or well-being, please reach out to your school administration directly. Together, we can ensure that all students and staff thrive in an environment free of hate, judgment, or fear — and filled instead with opportunity for learning, connection, and care.
Let us continue to grow in understanding, and lead with empathy — not just today, but every day.
