SCRCA issues watershed conditions statement, flood outlook

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority issued a watershed conditions statement and flood outlook on Friday, May 16, 2025.

“Thunderstorm activity late Thursday night and into Friday morning generated between 20 mm and 30 mm of rain across the region,” SCRCA officials say.

“An additional 5 mm to 10 mm of rain is forecast for tonight and into tomorrow, with a further 20 mm of rain possible from thunderstorm activity. If the upper ranges of these forecasts are realized, accumulated rainfall could total upwards of 60 mm between Thursday evening and early Saturday.”

SCRCA officials added: “A Strong Wind Warning in in effect for Lake St. Clair, with 30 km/h winds from the southwest overnight before turning westerly and increasing to between 35 and 40 km/h on Saturday. Strong winds from these directions may slow the flow of water near the outlet of the Sydenham River, causing a backwater effect in the Wallaceburg area and contributing to elevated water levels.”

Water levels may elevate into natural floodplain areas and low-lying roadways may be impacted, SCRCA officials say.

“Soils could be saturated from the rain and may contribute to ponding, increased runoff into watercourses, and possible increased erosion and seepage issues,” SCRCA officials added.

“High amounts of rainfall in a short period of time can lead to increased runoff and flash flooding, particularly in urban areas. Individuals are reminded to avoid watercourses and flooded areas due to dangerous conditions, slippery banks, and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away from the water.”

SCRCA added: “The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely. Please continue to monitor active weather alerts from Environment Canada.”

This message will remain in effect until 12 p.m. on May 20th, 2025, unless otherwise updated.
