Horse dies in $400,000 barn fire near Chatham

Fire crews responded to a structure fire at a property on Eighth Line Tuesday evening, where a barn was found fully engulfed in flames.

The call came in at approximately 8:50 p.m. on June 3.

Firefighters from Station #15 – Raleigh North and Station #1 – Chatham were first on scene at 7544 Eighth Line.

They were met with a working barn fire and reports of livestock possibly inside the structure.

Additional support was called in from Station #16 – Raleigh South, and a tanker truck from Station #17 – Merlin was used.

Fire crews were able to bring the blaze under control and protect nearby structures from damage.

Most of the livestock were confirmed safe in an adjacent pasture, but one horse died in the fire.

No other injuries were reported.

Chatham-Kent Police Service, Chatham-Kent EMS, Hydro One, and Entegrus also responded to the scene.

The fire has been deemed accidental, with damage estimated at $400,000.
