Generous giving

From The Pastor’s Pen – by Brian Horrobin

Back in early May our car broke down and had to be in the shop for an extended period of time.

Not only was this an inconvenience but it also prevented me from being able to carry out various parts of my job, such as travelling to appointments and visiting people in the hospitals that are out of town.

I had to let the congregation know that I would be limited for a duration of time.

It was then that I saw a beautiful display of love in action.

No less than four different people quickly came forward and offered me the use of their car.

In one case, it was their only vehicle, but they were willing to go without in order to help me in my situation.

That’s what I call sacrificial giving!

The apostle Paul spoke about the right attitude in giving in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7:”

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Although primarily referring to money in this verse, it is not limited to that.

In all our giving, be it time, money, kindness, ability – you name it – give generously, and then watch how God multiplies your efforts many times over.

It’s been said many times before that you can’t out give God, so when we give generously, we trigger a divine mechanism that brings God’s provision into the life of another in need.

I challenge you to be on the lookout this week for ways that you can be a generous giver.
