Emergency crews respond to Wheatley for another gas call

Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue responded Tuesday afternoon to a reported gas odour near 35 Talbot Street West in Wheatley. The call came in from a member of the public, prompting an immediate response and confirmation of gas in the area.

As of 8:45 p.m., officials reported that no gas was being detected, though monitoring continued at the scene.

Earlier in the evening, fire officials said the situation had stabilized. While no evacuations were ordered, a few nearby homes were advised to shelter in place as a precaution. Hydro services remained active throughout the incident.

Emergency crews scaled down operations around 7 p.m., with a dedicated crew remaining on-site overnight to monitor conditions. Chief officers also visited neighbouring homes to provide reassurance and answer questions.

All businesses in the area remained open during the response, and the public was asked to avoid the immediate vicinity.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue said public safety remained the top priority throughout the incident.
