Boats crash during Mitchell’s Bay bass fishing tournament, sending four to hospital

Two boats crashed on Saturday near Walpole Island, sending four people to hospital.

Published reports indicate the incident took place during the annual bass fishing tournament in Mitchell’s Bay.

“On July 12, 2025, at approximately 2:15 p.m., emergency services including members of the Lambton County OPP, Walpole Island Police Service, Chatham-Kent Police Service, Emergency Medical Services, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), and the Canadian Coast Guard responded to the report of a two-vessel collision on the Johnston River, near Johnston Bay, Walpole Island First Nation,” OPP officials said in a media release.

As a result of the collision, four individuals were assisted to shore by nearby boaters.

All four were subsequently transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing.

“The OPP would like to thank the members of the public who responded quickly to assist those involved,” OPP officials stated.

“Their quick actions helped ensure everyone was brought to safety as emergency responders arrived on scene.”
