From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin
One of the “givens”” in our modern society is that we will have debts to pay.
Most people who have a house are making mortgage payments.
New automobiles are often bought using a line of credit and can take a few years to pay off.
School loans also can linger long after the diploma has been handed out.
But what about personal debts, where you borrowed some money from a friend or family member and you haven’t come clean, even though you now have the means to settle matters?
The Bible has something to say about such a scenario in Proverbs 3:27-28: “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbour, ‘Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow’ – when you now have it with you.”
It’s important for us to settle our unpaid debts once we have the ability to do so.
To withhold repayment after the resources have come in is a blatant disregard for the welfare of the one who loaned us the money in the first place.
It’s not just money, either.
It may be the use of a vehicle, some tools, or any other item we stood in need of at the time but have not returned.
Wouldn’t it be nice on this mid-July day to take care of any such matters and go into the fall season with a clean slate?
