Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Chatham-Kent and Rondeau Park, with a prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather expected to begin Sunday.
Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach between 30 and 34 C, with humidex values pushing conditions to feel more like 38 to 42. Overnight lows are expected to remain warm, hovering between 19 and 23 C, offering little overnight relief.
The hottest conditions are expected Monday, and while some regions may see the heat break by Monday night, others could continue experiencing extreme temperatures into Wednesday.
Health officials urge residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, which can affect anyone but particularly older adults, children, people living alone, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Early signs of heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, dizziness, dark urine, and fatigue. If symptoms occur, individuals are advised to stop activity, rest, and drink water.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms may include red, hot skin, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Call 911 and try to cool the person immediately while awaiting help.
To stay safe:
– Drink water regularly, even before feeling thirsty.
– Close blinds and open windows if it’s cooler outside.
– Use air conditioning or fans, or move to cooler public spaces such as community centres or libraries.
– Schedule outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day.
– Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.
– Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.
Heat warnings are issued when temperatures or humidity levels are expected to increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
