Mosquitoes in Tilbury and Chatham test positive for West Nile virus

CK Public Health says mosquitoes collected from traps in Tilbury and northwest Chatham have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The samples, taken Aug. 19, are the first positive results identified from those traps this season, the health unit said.

West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Many people who contract the virus show no symptoms, while others may develop fever, headache, body aches and fatigue. In rare cases, severe illness can occur, including stiff neck, nausea, difficulty swallowing, vomiting and paralysis. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk.

“Anyone with severe symptoms should seek immediate medical attention,” the health unit said.

Officials are reminding residents to protect themselves by wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing, using insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin, staying indoors during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, keeping screens in good repair, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
