Peace in troubled times

From The Pastor’s Pen – By Brian Horrobin

I had a mix of emotions in the first week of May back in 1988.

My father had just died quite suddenly, and I was scheduled to start work in a church in Petrolia for the summer before my last year of seminary.

I was excited about the new position but also feeling gutted from the loss of my dad.

My parents had visited this church just three weeks earlier to meet the pastor and see my summer office.

I was unable to go with them due to exams and term papers that were due.

I thought they would abandon plans to make this trip from their home in Windsor, but they went anyways.

My first day on the job I walked into my office and sat at the desk, feeling a wave of sadness wash over me as I thought about my dad.

However, as I looked up, I saw a banner on the wall above my desk with these words from Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

Those words were a soothing balm for me, like a cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter’s day!

I needed to know that God would help me and walk with me that summer now that my dad was gone.

It dawned on me that my dad had read these very words just three weeks prior and that encouraged me.

I came to work each day and paused to read and meditate on this great promise of Scripture.

It really made a difference for me.

I have come to discover over the years that God has a reservoir of peace to draw from for us in our times of need.

Don’t be afraid to ask for a heaping helping of it when the situation calls for it.

God is not stingy and will amply supply!
