Sarnia Police Service officials allege: Two Toronto men are facing charges after police responded to a shoplifting incident on Quinn Drive on September 20.
Police were called around 5:14 p.m. after a man was seen placing stolen items into the trunk of a red SUV and covering them with a stroller. Officers arrived within minutes and found the vehicle with a man inside. He was arrested, and a search of the SUV turned up a large quantity of stolen merchandise.
The investigation also revealed the man was bound by three separate probation orders issued in Toronto, Durham Region and York.
A second man remained in the store. Police obtained his description from CCTV footage and began searching the area, controlling all exits. Officers spotted him in the parking lot attempting to leave the area. He was arrested after a brief struggle. Police later learned he had recently been released on bail in Toronto.
The stolen goods, which consisted of laundry detergent valued at $1,300, were recovered and returned to the retailer.
One man was remanded into custody following a bail hearing, while the second was released with conditions.
