OPP officials allege: Provincial police are warning about a rise in artificial intelligence–generated “deep fake” fraud videos circulating in Middlesex County.
The Ontario Provincial Police say the videos use AI to impersonate celebrities and political leaders who appear to promote investment schemes on social media. Investigators say the videos can be convincing, making it difficult for viewers to know if they are genuine.
Police say two victims in Thames Centre and Southwest Middlesex recently lost $28,000 and $3,500 respectively after investing in fraudulent programs advertised in the videos.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says deep fake scams are part of a growing trend where fraudsters manipulate audio and video to build trust and pressure people into handing over money.
Police are urging residents to be cautious with online investment opportunities and to seek advice from trusted sources before committing funds.
The Middlesex OPP and Middlesex County Crime Unit continue to investigate.
