Petrolia resident charged in internet child exploitation investigation

OPP officials allege: The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Child Sexual Exploitation Unit (CSEU), with assistance from the Lambton Detachment of the OPP, Chatham-Kent Police Service, and members of the OPP Digital Forensics Unit, have arrested and charged a Lambton County resident following a child sexual exploitation investigation.

On October 7, 2025, police executed a search warrant at a residence in Petrolia and seized several electronic devices.

As a result of the investigation, a 77-year-old Petrolia resident was charged with two counts of possession of child pornography contrary to section 163.1(4) of the Criminal Code.

The accused was released from custody following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sarnia on January 12, 2026.

“Online child exploitation is not a hidden threat, it’s a widespread and deeply troubling reality. Offenders are increasingly misusing everyday technology and popular apps to share illegal content, connect with others who share their intent, and target vulnerable children. These platforms, designed for connection and creativity, are being exploited in ways the public rarely sees. Law enforcement agencies around the world are working relentlessly to identify offenders, rescue victims, and ensure those who prey on children online are held accountable,” said Detective Staff Sergeant Chris Barkey of the OPP CSEU.

The safety and protection of children remains a top priority for the OPP. Parents are encouraged to talk with their children about internet safety and can find resources at cybertip.ca or protectchildren.ca.

Anyone with information related to online child exploitation can contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
