Lambton OPP share safety tips for Halloween night

With Halloween just around the corner, the Lambton detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is reminding residents to stay safe while enjoying the spooky celebrations on Oct. 31.

Police are urging trick-or-treaters to make visibility a priority by wearing bright, reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight or glow sticks. Children are encouraged to travel in groups with a responsible adult or guardian and to use sidewalks and crosswalks whenever possible. Officers also advise staying on the left side of the road facing traffic if no sidewalk is available, and to always look both ways before crossing.

Before digging into their haul, families should check all treats for signs of tampering or potential allergens.

Motorists are also being asked to slow down and stay alert in residential areas, where children may suddenly step onto the road. Police remind drivers to obey speed limits, allow extra time for trick-or-treaters to cross safely, and give themselves plenty of time to reach their destinations.

“Halloween is all about fun, but safety comes first. Let’s make sure the only surprises this Halloween are sweet ones,” the OPP said.

Lambton OPP will be increasing patrols in local neighbourhoods to help ensure a safe evening for everyone. Anyone who sees a suspected impaired or distracted driver is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
